Mission

THE CALIFORNIA INDIAN MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTER WAS FOUNDED IN 1996 WITH THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HISTORY, CULTURE, AND CONTEMPORARY LIFE OF CALIFORNIA INDIANS AND TO HONOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CIVILIZATION.

Vision

While colonization has worked to oppress indigenous people worldwide, California Native Americans have maintained their communities and cultures within their homelands despite extreme adversity and attempts of extermination. Our bold dream is not merely to survive but thrive. We believe elevated voices and leadership are necessary to protect the environment and health of our communities. We want to work in partnership to apply generations of traditional ecological knowledge and ensure that future generations of indigenous people are not characterized as representatives of the past but innovative changemakers leading the way for a better future.
