Mission: SANSUM DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SDRI) has been on the cutting edge of diabetes research, education, and clinical care since our founding in 1944 by Dr. William Sansum, the first U.S. physician to manufacture and administer insulin in the treatment of diabetes. With an established world class reputation for innovation in the field of type 1 diabetes, including the artificial pancreas system and diabetes in pregnancy, SDRI is broadening its area of expertise to address a range of issues in type 2 diabetes in an effort to impact this growing epidemic.
We offer ADA accredited nutrition and diabetes self-management education programs. All of our efforts are focused on significantly improving the lives of those impacted by diabetes.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

A number of foundations shifted their priorities to basic needs such as housing, food, and first responders resulting in a loss of philanthropic support we relied on. SDRI lost industry revenue when we were unable to conduct in person research studies for a period of 8 weeks.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Due to diabetes being a major risk factor for severe complications of COVID-19 it was unsafe to meet in person. As a result our programs shifted to a virtual platform and some participants no longer engaged.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Employees were sent home to work remotely and telehealth by zoom and cell phone quickly became the norm. A number of in person fundraising events had to be canceled and our largest signature event had to be reimagined as a virtual event.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Using a virtual platform for meetings to further our work proved to be effective. For example, many patients now prefer telehealth appointments instead of in person meetings.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


In 2020, as COVID-19 disrupted the world, Sansum Diabetes Research Institute (SDRI) quickly responded to the immediate needs of the diabetes community without interruption. Our research teams pivoted and created safe and innovative ways to continue our groundbreaking work despite the challenges of the pandemic. We continued our research and conducted 45 clinical research trials with 4,452 research participants and treated 170 women who lived with diabetes during pregnancy. Keeping diabetes under control is one of the best defenses against COVID-19. With that fact in mind, SDRI established our Diabetes Emergency Response Program in the spring of 2020. This unique strategy helped people living with diabetes survive this unprecedented global health crisis by providing up to date COVID-19 and diabetes information and resources in English and Spanish. In addition, our team transitioned patient visits and many programs to telemedicine services. In August 2020, SDRI hosted the first ever Virtual International COVID-19 and Diabetes Summit, in collaboration with the Diabetes Technology Society. Leaders from government agencies, universities, medical institutions, and corporations united virtually to develop an international consensus to identify strategies to protect diabetes patients from COVID-19, to learn lessons from the current and past pandemics, and to plan the way forward.
