Founded in 1970, Share Our Selves (SOS) has grown to become a model nonprofit organization providing the highest quality comprehensive safety net services to the homeless and low-income populations in Orange County. Share Our Selves was established to provide for the most serious concerns of the poor residing in Orange County, including food, clothing and emergency financial aid for housing, transportation, prescriptions and children's needs. SOS has since expanded to include medical and dental care. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Throughout the pandemic, Share Our Selves’ focus remained on ensuring patient and staff safety while maintaining services to the best of our ability. With restrictions in place, the organization faced limitations in delivering services in all areas to community members, which negatively impacted revenue streams. SOS was fortunate to receive the PPP funds as well as other support to continue maintaining staffing levels and sustaining organization’s financial position.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The organization faced challenges in providing medical, dental, behavioral health as well as other social services. Due to distancing requirements and decreased staffing and volunteer levels, SOS was more limited in our ability to meet the community demand for direct health services that was needed. SOS collaborated with community partners to ensure coordination of care and services during this time of high need.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
To continue operations, the organization pivoted to providing many of our primary care visits to be held by virtual platforms instead of face-to-face to avoid any unnecessary exposure to COVID-19. While this solution could not be replicated for all service lines, it allowed SOS to ability to maintain delivery of primary care and behavioral health services to patients and provide additional access within the community.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Currently, telehealth visits consist of roughly 50% of medical visits and nearly 90% of behavioral health visits. SOS plans to continue expanding virtual platforms to optimize virtual care delivery options.

On April 29th, 2020, Share Our Selves (SOS) clinicians diagnosed our first confirmed case of COVID-19. Since that time, SOS has been a key network organization in Orange County (OC) for COVID-19 testing and vaccination. We worked hard to aggressively address one of the biggest priorities in ending the pandemic: getting shots in arms. But doing so has not been without tremendous effort. Community Health Centers (CHCs), like SOS, had a tough time securing vaccine inventory early in 2021, even though CHCs serve patient populations that are often marginalized, vulnerable, or harder to reach. Thankfully, the partnership between SOS, the Coalition of OC Community Health Centers, local school districts, the OC Board of Supervisors, and dozens of volunteers helped us overcome the hurdles and procure thousands of COVID-19 vaccination doses. Along with providing our patients with vaccines through our clinics, SOS successfully began hosting pop-up vaccination sites with the strategic engagement of our partners. At the first pop-up event in March 2021, SOS delivered 300 doses of vaccine to one of the zip codes hardest hit by COVID-19 in OC. Improvement and ongoing success in hosting these pop-up vaccination clinics began placing SOS in higher demand to hold more clinics at third-party sites, as many local population segments were identified as having little to no access to vaccination. But the element that played the largest role in determining our participation was directly tied to our mission and values regarding health equity. If the identified population in need of vaccines faces larger-than-average gaps to accessing health care and resources, then serving them is our mission. As of March 2022, SOS has administered over 10,000 doses of COVID vaccines and counting. The undertaking required consistent strategic planning, as well as the added time and effort by SOS staff and volunteers, to go above and beyond during this time of need.
