This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Institute of Heartmath reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Revenue
Staffing
Balance Sheet
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Donations to our organization declined by 45%. We also applied and received the PPP loan and thus were able to employ a full staff.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
We immediately shifted to virtual/Zoom program delivery and it was a success in 2020. COVID extension to 2021 has been a bit more challenging. We've had to get very creative.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
First we spent a short while making sure our virtual staff were ok and had what they needed to work from home. Next we shifted to 100% virtual offerings - programs, classes and meetings. Making sure our staff stayed united was at the forefront. Weekly short 'all company Zoom meetings' so all could see each other, send 5 minutes in breakout rooms was the glue and provided an emotional lift in spirit.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
The virtual/Zoom programs we offered for the first time in 2020 were successful as we are international in scope. We plan to continue the programs and explore new ways of engaging our donors, clients, and collaborators - in the area of research and eduction.

The HeartMath Institute is in around 2,000 schools in the United States and has certified approximately 1,000 trainers that work in communities (first responders, educators, veterans and their families, research teams, parents) and with nonprofit agencies across the country and internationally.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
To keep the connection between virtual and on-site employees, we instated morning 'Zoom get-togethers' for all employees that wanted to take part with the intention to connect in the heart and set the tone for the day. Since our incoming phone calls and email requests for help increased tremendously, we quickly and wisely adapted our services, products, and resources to an online model and recreated all training programs so they could easily be delivered through Zoom. We gave away over 115,000 units of HMI's most popular children's learning program (for kids, teachers, and parents) and an excellent 90-minute program to the public to help them deal with the stress that was now upon them. This unprecedented gesture allowed for thousands of children, teachers, parents, first responders, community workers, and those most vulnerable to have access to HeartMath's tools at no cost. We added messaging to our appeals that embodied a deep need that it was a year to help and care for humanity and were successful in our fundraising efforts. Through donor-sponsored funds, many educational organizations, first responders, community workers, and veterans were given HeartMath technology and other products to help reduce stress and build resilience. We also offered our annual in-person event in a virtual setting at a reduced rate so more could attend. We felt that offering a place for hundreds to gather was most important. The reviews from those that attended were inspiring and filled with gratitude and made it all worthwhile - over 900 registered from all around the world.
