The vision of the Parents Television and Media Council is to provide a safe and sound entertainment

Goal One: Produce unique and compelling research regarding harmful, explicit and age-inappropriate streaming media program content that is being marketed to, and consumed by, children and teens.

Goal Two: Advocate for the passage of federal, state and local legislative remedies to help parents protect their children from harmful, explicit and age-inappropriate streaming media program content.

Goal Three: Increase the reach of our educational and advocacy programs by growing our membership ranks by 25,000 people, and growing our active donor ranks by 5,000 people.

As the entertainment industry landscape is ever-evolving, so too must our organization's leadership be able to adapt to that changing landscape. Rather than paying for conferences or more traditional institutional education, the PTC is actively engaged in outreach and collaboration with academicians and scientific experts in the field of media and its impact on children. Senior management every month synthesizes myriad academic and scientific research reports, and they then engage directly with those who conducted the research and produced the reports. The result is not only a well-informed leadership team; it also serves to build insightful public education and advocacy programs, and to build strong alliances to further mutual public policy objectives.

The Parents Television Council recently added the words "and Media" to its corporate moniker (legally via "D/B/A") in order to reflect the shift in the way children today view their entertainment programming. During the COVID pandemic, children shifted their educational experience from in-school learning to online learning, forcing them in front of computer screens at unprecedented levels. That put millions of children only mouse-clicks away from harmful, graphic and age-inappropriate programming; and in the process the ability for parents to monitor what their children were consuming was mostly obviated. As this organization shifted its priority away from broadcast and cable television programming, and instead focusing on streaming media program content that was being marketed to children, over this past year the PTC was forced to shift its Research and Public Education programs accordingly. Our research has centered entirely on age-inappropriate streaming content that is being marketed to children. Our earned media and marketing has focused on helping parents understand the volume and degree of explicit streaming media that is targeting their children. Many of our historically successful levers for grassroots advocacy (e.g. FCC Broadcast Indecency enforcement, and Advertiser Accountability) are no longer available with streaming media. That required us to identify legislative remedies to advance our mission, and to increase our collaboration with other like-minded organizations to form powerful alliances advocating for positive legislative outcomes.
