Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Due to the pandemic, we were not able to hold our annual Meet the Scientist event, which also doubles as a fundraiser for the organization. We also saw a decrease in workplace giving funds, DIY events - like Facebook fundraisers, walks/run, etc and overall fundraising. Due to this decrease and the uncertainty of the financial market, we postponed our grant process several months and held off on hiring new and unfilled positions.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Typically we host an annual in person event, centered around our current and past research scientists and their current work. Due to the pandemic, we were not able to offer that program for two years. A new scientific symposium event was in early stage planning in late 2019 which would have been a vehicle for showcasing the research funded by the organization and support increased corporate fundraising. Planning for this event as been deferred until at least 2022 due to the limitations on travel and in-person events.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We were able to move to a remote setting for almost all of our operations. Most of our staff had never worked from home so we had to pivot quickly to get them set up with new laptops, VPN, webcams and other web capabilities. We also switched to more email fundraising campaigns. With Covid-19 disproportionately affecting individuals with immune system compromises we increased the amount of information we provided to our constituents and we highlighted projects related to better understanding the implications of Covid-19.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We have moved to a hybrid workplace model and plan to stay that way! We still have a few staff in the office full time, but most of our other positions work at least part time remotely. We also continue to increase our fundraising efforts via email and social media. All of our board meetings switched to Zoom and we will continue to offer zoom links for our attendees who can't travel - this has resulted in cost-savings with no loss of organization effectiveness.

In late 2020, the Board of Directors hired a national search firm to replace the CEO vacancy. The investment led to a national search that brought in a non-profit veteran. The new CEO has implemented professional development goals and training (such as participation in the National Health Care seminars and constituent groups)opportunities for herself and the new staff. In addition, the Board of Directors has planned for governance training, financial training and a board retreat for the current members to strengthen their skills.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Over the last year, our Foundation has found a way to adapt extremely well to external demands and changes. Our staff, once office based has adjusted to the pandemic by moving into a hybrid work environment with relative ease. Like many organizations we have seen a decline in certain areas of fundraising we are grateful that we don't rely on special events for a majority of our income and have been able instead to engage new donors, create new partnerships and increase our email fundraising to ensure that our revenue remains steady.

Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.

Inclusion of ideas for daily management of symptoms in our newsletter and on our website. This includes recipes for people following anti-inflammatory diets, information about services for people living and working with chronic conditions, effective pain management strategy options, and ideas for improving access and awareness in communities. We have also created a new experience-sharing website where patients can find information and motivation by accessing the stories of others.

We've partnered with GuideStar by Candid to survey organizations about their feedback practices. Nonprofit organizations can fill out the How We Listen section of their Candid profile to receive a rating.


Charity Navigator awards full credit for this Beacon to every nonprofit that is eligible for an Encompass Rating that completes the survey, in recognition of their willingness to publicly share this information with the nonprofit and philanthropic communities. This data is not evaluated for quality at this time. Validation will be added in future iterations of this Beacon.

Analysis and Research


Like the overall Encompass Rating System, the Culture & Community Beacon is designed to evolve as metrics are developed and ready for integration. Our partnership with Feedback Labs and Guidestar by Candid, and other partners including Fund for Shared Insight, GlobalGiving, and Keystone Accountability, enables us to launch the first version of this beacon with Constituent Feedback information collected on Candid's site.


Feedback practices have been shown to support better Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion outcomes, an essential area of assessment that we intend to further expand and develop in the future. Feedback Labs has documented several studies which indicate that beyond achieving organizational goals, nonprofits that are attentive and responsive to concerns and ideas raised by beneficiaries establish stronger relationships with the people they serve, promote greater equity, and empower constituents in ways that can help to ensure better long-term outcomes.
