Mission

Tostan's mission is to empower communities to develop and achieve their vision for the future and inspires large-scale movements leading to dignity for all.. Tostan means "breakthrough" in the West African language of Wolof. It's 3-year Community Empowerment Program (CEP) is an integrated, multidimensional development approach that has reached 5 million people since 1991. The program has impacts across the five key areas of Governance, Education, Health, Environment and Economic Growth, while other key results of the holistic program include the abandonment of female genital cutting and child/forced marriage, dramatic improvements in maternal and infant health, increased school registration, especially for girls, and the empowerment of women and girls.
