It has been nearly two years since Charity Navigator first offered a guide for concerned donors looking to alleviate the suffering of the victims of the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Unfortunately, very little progress has been made in resolving the conflict, and, as a result, 180,000 people have died and over 2 million have been forced from their homes. Now the United Nations is reporting that malnutrition rates are beginning to rise again as the violence escalates and humanitarian relief efforts are short on funding.

As evidenced by the thousands of people who attended the Save Darfur rally on April 30 in Washington, DC, many Americans are passionate about finding a way to help the people suffering in Sudan. A good way for people in the United States to offer their help is to donate to one of the many U.S.-based charities that are currently on-the-ground in Sudan and neighboring Chad working with internally displaced people, refugees, and other groups affected by the crisis.

Several of the charities working to alleviate suffering and bring an end to the conflict in Sudan are rated highly by Charity Navigator. Highly rated charities are those that have demonstrated exceptional financial management, outperforming most of their peers in their efforts to allocate and grow their finances in the most fiscally responsible way possible. Table 1 below highlights the work of 4-star and 3-star charities with peoples affected by the crisis in Sudan. Donors can be confident that contributions made to these charities will be spent efficiently as these charities have low overhead and fundraising costs which allow them to use more of their resources in carrying out their mission.
