ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: 1 Year Anniversary

What Happened to the Money Raised via the #IceBucketChallenge?

August 2, 2015

Last summer, more than 17 million people took the #IceBucketChallenge and subsequently helped raise more than $100 million for ALS related charities. We published a Hot Topic called ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to help donors, many of whom weren't familiar with ALS, make informed giving choices. Our Hot Topic included some observations about the campaign and a listing of highly-rated ALS charities.

Now that a year has passed since the peak of the social media phenomenon, it is time to check back in with the charities and find out how their donations were put to use (it is good practice to follow up with a charity a year after you've donated). To help you with that effort, we asked all the charities featured in that Hot Topic to report on their progress. Reports from those charities that provided responses are linked below (and in the left hand column).

Did You Know We Are a Charity, Too?

If even a third of the 7 million people who visited our site last year had donated a dollar to Charity Navigator, we would comfortably meet our annual budget and be able to do what so many of you ask us to do every day--rate more charities!

With the support of users like you, we are currently investing in staff and technology. This will allow us to improve the search and organizational features of our site, making it easier to find the information that matters most to you. We will also continue to enhance our evaluation system and metrics.

So, whether you're a first time visitor or a long time user, we ask for your help in achieving our goal. Your gift of any size is most deeply appreciated! Thank You!
