During the summer and fall of 2016, several powerful earthquakes struck Italy.
  • A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Italian town of Amatrice on August 24. The powerful quake killed several hundred people, trapped many under debris and displaced thousands.
  • Two earthquakes hit Italy on October 26. The quakes - one a magnitude 5.4 and the other 5.9 – damaged buildings, electrical lines, and phone lines.
  • On October 30, Italy experienced a magnitude 6.5 earthquake - the strongest quake to hit Italy since 1980. It caused additional damage to the towns destroyed by the quake in August.
