FAQ for Unrated Charities

For Unrated Charities:

  1. Why isn't our organization listed? Answer
    • If your charity has recently been certified as tax exempt, it may take a few months for us to receive that information from the IRS. Once we do, your organization will show as an unrated charity on our website. When the organization meets our criteria for a rating, the website will display that the organization is potentially eligible for a rating.

We receive charities' information directly from the IRS, so there is no action required by the charity.

You can learn learn more about our current criteria to be rated here: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=32
  2. What can our organization do to get a rating? Answer
    • Charity Navigator currently evaluates more than 9,000 charitable organizations, making us America's largest charity evaluator. In fact, the ones we evaluate account for roughly 60% of the donations in America (excluding donations to houses of worship).

Although we do not currently evaluate your organization, you can find basic information about it in the search results. There you can also see if your charity is potentially eligible to be rated or if your charity doesn't meet our criteria for evaluation.

If you are eligible to be rated, a vote feature will automatically appear on your page so supporters and other interested parties can vote to have your organization rated. We receive all information directly from the IRS, so there is no action required by the charity.

Here is a link to the current eligibility requirements and other breakdowns of our current methodology: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=32
  3. Voting Answer
    • Your charity is potentially eligible to be rated and your charity's profile page has a voting tool that you can share with your staff, board, and close supporters. The more votes the charity receives, the higher up in the queue your charity will move and the closer it will be to being reviewed by one of our analysts. In order to vote, you need to be a registered user of our website.

There is no minimum vote requirement needed to be considered. The "vote" feature simply helps our organization prioritize which organizations to review for possible evaluation based on user interest.
  4. Who is our charity representative? Answer
    • Unrated charities are currently unable to have charity representatives.

All the information currently posted on unrated organization pages come directly from the IRS, most often from the organization's Form 990. We are able to make some changes internally. Please email us with your EIN, your contact information, and a description of changes you wish to make on your organization's listing.
  5. Displaying incorrect NTEE code Answer
    • All of the information currently listed on unrated organization pages come directly from the IRS Business Master File. Here is a list and explanation of the NTEE codes. Page 8 of this document outlines activity codes.

Please email us with your EIN, your contact information, and a description of changes you wish to make on your organization's page.
