Suicide Prevention and Awareness

Highly-rated charities leading the conversation on suicide prevention and mental health support

Over the last two decades, the suicide rate in the United States has sharply increased, making it one of the leading cause of death in our country, according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Suicide now claims more lives than automobile accidents each year, and some leaders in the mental health field believe that our deteriorating mental health care system is partially to blame.
At Charity Navigator, we believe we have a responsibility to elevate the voices of effective organizations that are advocating for and providing support and education to individuals and families that have been affected by suicide.
Although September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to share stories and resources and shed light on this highly-stigmatized topic, during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis, there has been a reported rise in mental health-related suffering. Charity Navigator is, therefore, spotlighting a number of highly-rated organizations that are recognized as leaders in the field of suicide prevention, ranging from support to education to advocacy.
We hope you will consider supporting one of these outstanding organizations today as they walk alongside those who are currently struggling and strive to bring awareness to this important issue.
To nonprofits, if you are a 3- or 4-Star rated nonprofit providing support; please complete this survey for your organization to be reviewed for this list. We hope to greatly expand our list of charities presented.
If you are having thoughts of suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Or, text HOME to 741741 to be connected to a trained Crisis Counselor through Crisis Text Line.
