April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The intention of this month is to raise awareness of sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. Sexual assault can refer to rape, unwanted sexual contact in any form, child sexual abuse, domestic violence with an intimate partner, human trafficking, and voyeurism. The National Coalition of Domestic Violence reports that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical and sexual violence with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.

The #MeToo movement gained global recognition to help survivors of sexual violence by building a network of advocates. “What started as local grassroots work has expanded to reach a global community of survivors from all walks of life and helped to de-stigmatize the act of surviving by highlighting the breadth and impact of sexual violence worldwide.”
