Consultative Council of Nonprofit Leaders

In April 2020, Charity Navigator shared its intention to launch a new experimental rating system that will expand the number of nonprofits rated from 9,000  to 100,000.  The expansion will include younger and less-established charities that have not historically been rated under the current star rating system.
Throughout the process, Charity Navigator has consulted with donors, grantors, and nonprofit and for-profit leaders. In-depth interviews and surveys were conducted to inform the methodology, system design, and messaging.
In addition to increasing the reach of Charity Navigator ratings, the new experimental rating system also provides a framework that will help increase the depth, providing donors, other site consumers, and the nonprofit sector, with greater insight into the factors associated with nonprofit sustainability and mission success. Delivering on this goal will depend on Charity Navigator’s ability to identify meaningful variables that can be used to construct robust indicators and access a variety of data sources beyond nonprofit tax filings.
In order to best serve nonprofits and the donors that support them, Charity Navigator believes it is essential to continue to have conversations and elicit feedback on key decisions in Charity Navigator’s ratings and resources moving forward.  Therefore, Charity Navigator decided to create the Consultative Council of Nonprofit Leaders.
An open invitation was sent to more than 16,000 individuals on May 1, 2020. With more than 350 applications received, candidates were assessed based on their prominence and professional recognition in the nonprofit sector, their record of collaboration and ability to build strong partnerships, and their ability to have an analytic and strategic mindset. Additionally, as the nonprofit landscape is diverse, it was also important that a wide spectrum of backgrounds and identities were represented on the Council. After careful consideration, 25 members were selected on Friday, June 5, 2020.
