Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory.
For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.
This donor advisory was published on Tuesday, June 1, 2010
In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for Feed The Children in March 2012 because the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since June 1, 2010) and because the issue that prompted the Donor Advisory has been resolved. Specifically:
In December 2010 the Oklahoma attorney general voluntarily dismissed a receivership action that had been pending involving Feed The Children and, by February 2011, it was reported that certain other matters involving Feed the Children had been resolved.
Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:
It had been reported that Feed The Children was the subject of an investigation by the Oklahoma attorney general concerning allegations of governance improprieties. For further information, please see The Oklahoman's news coverage.
On February 11, 2011, Feed The Children contacted Charity Navigator and said that "the Oklahoma attorney general's office has stated that Feed The Children is not currently under investigation." In addition, Feed The Children indicated that Oklahoma Assistant Attorney General Julie Bays was available to talk with us regarding this matter.
On January 19, 2012 and again on February 16, 2012, we spoke with Ms. Bays who indicated that through December 2010 the Oklahoma attorney general's office was considering placing Feed The Children into receivership. In addition, she indicated that the requirement that Feed The Children submit monthly reports to her office ended in December 2010, that her office has not been investigating Feed the Children since that time, and that Feed the Children voluntarily filed reports with her office periodically for a period after December 2010.
It was reported that Feed The Children was being sued by an advertising firm for alleged breach of contract. For further information please see The Oklahoman's news coverage. On February 11, 2011, Feed The Children sent us the following statement: “We are pleased to report that Feed The Children and Cross MediaWorks have come to a mutual agreement. This agreement allows both parties to continue to do business together. We welcome the opportunity to be associated with a company that has a great understanding of the nonprofit sector. This renewed relationship provides exciting possibilities for the future of Feed The Children to expand our mission through increased public exposure.”
It was reported that Larri Sue Jones, daughter of Feed The Children's founders, filed a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the charity and five of its directors. For further information please see The Oklahoman's news coverage.
It was reported that Feed The Children was investigating whether Larry Jones used a kickback to pay off a $1 million loan on his house. For further information please see The Oklahoman's news coverage. On February 11, 2011, Feed The Children said that this issue has been resolved and shared this document.
Feed The Children has bought out Frances Jones's contract so that she's no longer employed at the charity. Frances Jones founded the charity with husband Larry Jones more than 30 years ago. For further information please see The Oklahoman's news coverage.
Oklahoma attorney general's review of Feed The Children led to a criminal investigation into possible violations of the law by Larry Jones for activities while he was president of the charity. Please click here to read the news coverage. Ms. Bays (noted in item 1 above) indicated on a call with us on January 9, 2012 that a criminal investigation of “certain former employees” is still underway, however she noted that Feed The Children is not under investigation in this matter.
