Program Name: Global Campaign to End Cataract Blindness
Problem

Over 100 million people around the world are blind or severely visually impaired by cataracts, even though a cost-effective solution already exists. The vast majority of these cases (about 90%) are in developing countries, where cataracts cause as much as 70% of blindness. Women are less likely to receive eye care and make up almost 2/3 of all patients. Children and grandchildren of patients often leave work or school to care for those who develop severe cataracts making it a family challenge.

Strategy

HelpMeSee is a global campaign to end cataract blindness, the leading cause of blindness worldwide. HelpMeSee intends to make the sight-restoring surgery available to millions of poor through scaling training to the necessary number of MSICS specialists recruited from within their communities. Through advanced training in MSICS, sustained outreach to populations in need, and high-quality surgeries validated through a cloud-based reporting system, we intend to end the leading cause of blindness.

IF:THEN

IF the current volume of cataract surgeries remain low......

THEN the number of cases of cataract blindness will continue to rise beyond the more than 20 million currently affected.

IF 30,000 specialists are trained in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery, a high-quality, cost-effective treatment for cataracts,...

THEN access to sight-restoring care will improve dramatically in the developing world and millions who are blind now will experience the gift of sight.

IF local specialists are trained to deliver sight-restoring cataract surgeries within their local communities in developing regions...

THEN access to care will increase and provide a sustainable solution.
