With seven new instructors hired and a new program manager with deep expertise in adult education, our President & CEO expanded the number of people in management positions, and supports their growth by giving them additional responsibilities, including their participation in board meetings, DC Council hearings and media interviews, and soliciting their ideas for new courses.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
1) We have been actively partnering with Comcast, the iconic DC bookstore Politics & Prose and DC Council members - most recently we hosted a grand opening event with all of above to welcome the community to our new classrooms. The event was covering in local media and via social media.
2) Our instructors also serve as advocates and share presentations with local literacy-focused organizations.
3) As new data about literacy levels in DC become available, we amplify and share research findings through press releases, social media and media interviews.
4) It goes without saying that we are training members of our community to read, etc - and we encourage our volunteers to serve as tutors which broadens community participation.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The pandemic stressed our students who have traditionally faced learning and economic barriers. Many of our learners struggle to balance learning, with family and children. They also continue to struggle with impacts of COVID, access to computers and sufficient Internet. Many of our students were not equipped to learn virtually and it was necessary to purchase a number of laptops and hotspots. Many students were not digitally literate. We continue to grapple with how to best provide support to adults who are mentally and financially stressed, and who are forgoing their education pursuits for immediate low-paying jobs. We have experienced an increased demand for evening and weekend classes, and sharp increase for wrap around services, which include mental health and financial management. Therefore, in addition to expanding our Jump Start 2 Success program, we added 5 new programs to support workforce skills and digital literacy. We now offer these programs as hybrid models, and evening courses to ensure participation. In addition, we created a private/public partnership with Comcast who now provides our students with free wifi.
