Imagine a time where horses are no longer thought of only as tools or sports equipment. We see it, so we help educate the public on responsible horse ownership, engage with our communities to address the issues facing our industry today, and inspire people to invite horses into their lives—as companions, riding horses, or other respected roles.
In response to growing wildfire emergencies impacting Colorado's horses and equine families, CHR has increased disaster preparedness efforts. Leadership has prioritized increased partnerships to support these efforts that safeguard horses and their owners. Collaborating with ASPCA has increased disaster preparedness equipment and educational efforts. Separately, CHR has expanded our partnership with Boulder County Animal Control officers, maintaining a 2021 memo of understanding appointing CHR as a primary contact when Animal Control needs support in the evacuating or housing of animals during a disaster.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
CHR has collected data in the last few years to inform us that the majority of rehomed horses from private homes are horses with non-rideable, companion-only statuses. CHR is unique as a rescue in that it values and welcomes horses of all abilities, whether they can carry a rider or not. However, the typical demand from adopters is for rideable horses. CHR has adapted to these external trends to launch a comprehensive “Companion Connection” program in 2022. This program will increase awareness around companion horses, the issues this group faces, and the solutions that we can expand for them. In many equine industries, horses are viewed as tools or sports equipment. Many fall victim to the antiquated notion of being a “starter horse” only to be traded in for a more advanced model later. These patterns of “use” of horses versus care leave many horses homeless and vulnerable when they are no longer rideable or competition-ready. This challenge can slow down placements, but we are developing a thorough program to work to increase visibility and desire to adopt a deserving companion horse.
Additionally, CHR has not fallen victim to national 'Great Resignation' trends within the last two years. Due to forward-thinking rebalancing of benefits for our dedicated staff and enhancing flexible, work-life balance policies, CHR has maintained and expanded our strong team. This culture has prevented turnover, allowing CHR to implement new programming efforts to increase our impact. Strong team culture has also enhanced development, growing our number of supporters and annual revenue.
