CN Advisory: High Concern

San Diego Junior Theatre

On January 5, 2018, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on the charges of improper conduct taking place at San Diego Junior Theatre in an article titled, "Lawsuit seeks documents about alleged Junior Theatre sex abuse." For this reason, we have issued a High Concern CN Advisory on San Diego Junior Theatre. For more information regarding the charges reported, please see The San Diego Union-Tribune article.

Charity Response

San Diego Junior Theatre provided Charity Navigator with the following response to this Advisory:

San Diego Junior Theatre values a safe educational environment and works very hard to maintain a high standard of safety for our students. The incident with Eric VonMetzke was identified and dealt with swiftly because the organization had strong safety protocols in place. Upon learning of the incident, Junior Theatre staff took swift action, immediately filing a police report, and conducting its own thorough investigation.

Junior Theatre staff has used the incident as an opportunity to review all safety measures and to re-assess and improve the effectiveness of our detection, response policies, practices, and staff training.

Completion of a successful Live Scan (fingerprinting) continues to be a pre-requisite for all Junior Theatre employees. State Mandated Reporter training has always been part of any employee’s onboarding, but since the incident, proof of the online training is now a requirement prior to the first day of employment. Regular professional development seminars are scheduled annually with teaching artists. Attendance at the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention seminar is now an annual requirement.

The concerns raised about illegal activity, improper conduct, or organizational mismanagement are serious both in nature and scope and have thus warranted this CN Advisory. We have published this advisory to provide donors with content that they may find useful when making their giving decisions.
