OneSky (Half the Sky Foundation) believes in the vast potential hidden in our world's most vulnerable children. We create and implement simple, replicable early learning programs that provide nurturing, responsive care, transforming the lives of thousands of at-risk children every day and ensuring that those most in need have a second chance at childhood.
Founded in 1998 to provide care for institutionalized children in China, OneSky has learned over nearly two decades of work that the needs of young children are universal. OneSky is working toward large-scale, practical application of its innovative yet proven early childhood interventions models across multiple developing countries and for children living outside as well as inside orphanage walls. To date, OneSky has trained 14,000 caregivers to provide life-changing care for 130,000 children.

Program Name: Orphanage Model
Problem

935 million children in our world woke up this morning to another day with no loving parent in their lives. That’s too many. Children growing up without love cannot thrive. They can never reach their full potential. Institutionalized infants and toddlers, because they often lack positive interactions with caring adults from the very beginning of life, are at great risk - they lose about one month of linear growth for every three months in institutional care.

Strategy

OneSky interventions provide training and guidance for teachers, caregivers and community that offer children regular access to high quality interactions with caring adults. Once marginalized children enter primary school on a level with their peers, having developed secure attachments, self esteem, resiliency, curiosity and improved social, emotional, language and cognitive skills which prepare them to succeed in school and society.

IF:THEN

Once marginalized children enter primary school on a level with their peers, having developed secure attachments, self esteem, resiliency, curiosity and improved social, emotional, language and cognitive skills which prepare them to succeed in school and society....

THEN Orphaned and left-behind children no longer have to be second-class citizens, victims of China's social and economic plans for development and rapid urbanization. Better prepared to benefit from developing universal education policies, they can grow up positioned to enjoy opportunities that arise as China develops.
