We envision a world where everyone feels welcome in the American hiking community and has permanent access to meaningful hiking, including urban, frontcountry, and backcountry opportunities. We will achieve this vision by empowering all communities to enjoy, share, and preserve the hiking experience; advocating for the protection and expansion of hiking spaces; fostering trail stewardship; and collaborating with partners whose strengths are complementary.

Historical CN Advisories

04/20/2016-10/01/2016: Moderate Concern Advisory

In accordance with our policy for removing CN Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Moderate Concern CN Advisory for the American Hiking Society on October 1, 2016 because the issues that prompted the CN Advisory have been resolved. Specifically:

  • American Hiking Society submitted their Fiscal Year 2015 Audit to Charity Navigator. The audit no longer includes an "Emphasis of Matter of Going Concern."

Charity Navigator had published a CN Advisory on the American Hiking Society because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • American Hiking Society’s 12/2014 audit states that American Hiking Society has an “Emphasis of Matter Regarding Going Concern” that is outlined in Note C. It reads, “The Society has experienced recurring losses resulting in a deficit in unrestricted net assets. [...] The ability of the Society to continue as a going concern is dependent upon its ability to generate additional revenue and support and to curtail expenses without hampering its programs..” For this reason, we have issued this Moderate Concern CN Advisory. For more information, please see the Audit Note.

    Charity Response
