Results Information

Program Name: The Sunburst Youth Housing Project
Problem

In the US, over 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. Many of these youth were ejected from their homes because of their sexual orientation. Due to their homelessness, they are at high risk for drug abuse and/or survival sex, which is performing sexual acts out of extreme need. The Sunburst Housing Project has helped 100's of youth with a 97% success rate, meaning that 97% of it's residents have moved on to live independently, attend college, or obtain full time employment after vacating.

Strategy

Sunburst provides each resident with their own studio apartment and a welcome kit that includes clothing, basic household supplies and a hygiene kit. It is approximately $23,000 per year, per resident, to fund the project. These funds come from donations and government grants only. MARYAH's strategy is to raise donation funds through social events and online fundraising in order to provide the Project enough money to continue.

IF:THEN

IF If homeless LGBTQ youth have access to affordable, supportive housing, along with occupational and health services...

THEN We can reduce the percentage of homeless youth that identify as LGBTQ in San Diego
