Charity Response

The Breast Cancer Society provided Charity Navigator with the following response:

"We report our activities in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Internal Revenue Code (ITC). We also follow non-profit best practices and industry standards by strictly adhering to the Guidelines and Standards of ACCORD. We follow all the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service regarding pre- and post-contribution activity for all of our domestic and international goods and commodities disbursements. As we further explained to CNN, we have photographic and written documentation for all supplies that we claim. I have personally met (and have been photographed) with Chiefs of Medicine, doctors and oncologists at international facilities. We also explained, as did our vendor, that customs value is not related to the actual value of shipped items. It is our responsibility to assign fair market value to the actual goods being donated in accordance to accounting regulations and industry standards. Our vendor works with customs to assign the CIF value."

On May 19, 2015, the Federal Trade Commission reported on the findings of its investigation of Breast Cancer Society, Inc. in a press release titled, "FTC, All 50 States and D.C. Charge Four Cancer charities With Bilking Over $187 Million from Consumers." For this reason, we have issued a High Concern CN Advisory. For more information regarding the charges reported, please see the Federal Trade Commission press release and the FTC complaint.

  • On March 30, 2016, FTC published an article titled, "FTC, States Settle Claims Against Two Entities Claiming to Be Cancer Charities; Orders Require Entities to Be Dissolved and Ban Leader from Working for Non-Profits." For more information, please see FTC article.

The concerns raised about illegal activity, improper conduct, or organizational mismanagement are serious both in nature and scope and have thus warranted this CN Advisory.
