Results Information

Program Name: Food Bank of Alaska
Problem

Nearly 103,000 Alaskans, roughly 1 in 7, does not have dependable access to enough nutritious food for a healthy, active life. This includes 1 in 5 children statewide. (Map the Meal Gap, map.feedingamerica.org). Both the level of need and the level of difficulty to provide food assistance vary by region in this state where 80 percent of communities are not accessible by road. In addition, solving hunger will require the whole community addressing many factors.

Strategy

Food Bank of Alaska’s strategy is two-fold. First, we will evaluate and adapt our food sourcing and distribution model and implement a plan to upgrade our distribution center and equipment to implement this model efficiently and effectively. Second, we will increase public understanding of food insecurity in Alaska, increase community engagement of those with a stake in ending hunger, and advocate for policies to both provide nutrition to people in need and to reduce their number.

IF:THEN

IF If we salvage food that would otherwise be wasted and distribute it to Alaskans in need...

THEN Then we can decrease the number of Alaskans who are food insecure

IF If we partner with all who have a stake in solving hunger and boldly and creatively explore opportunities to increase access to food...

THEN Then we can solve hunger in Alaska

IF If we are resourceful, efficient and dependable stewards of community support, including food from all sources...

THEN Then we can decrease the number of Alaskans who are food insecure
