CN Advisory: High Concern

Help the Vets

1613 East Livingston Street Orlando, FL 32803
tel: (407) 376-7000
EIN: 46-1741446

In January 2017, it came to the attention of Charity Navigator that Help the Vets, was the subject of an investigation by the State of Michigan's Attorney General's Office according to their press statement titled, "Schuette Files Cease and Desist Against Breast Cancer Charity Who Claimed to Raise Money for Research Grants." This investigation was subsequently settled when Help the Vets withdrew its application to register in the State of Michigan and agreed not to conduct operations in Michigan for five years (this restriction will expire on February 8, 2022). For more information, the press statement from the State of Michigan Attorney General's Office can be found here, and the settlement agreement entered into between the Michigan Attorney General and Help the Vets can be found here. For this reason and because the charity has indicated that it intends to dissolve, we have issued a High Concern CN Advisory.

  • On July 19, 2018, The Federal Trade Commission released a press statement titled, "FTC and States Combat Fraudulent Charities That Falsely Claim to Help Veterans and Servicemembers." For more information, please see The Federal Trade Commission press statement.

The concerns raised about organizational legitimacy and/or federal tax law compliance are serious both in nature and scope and have thus warranted this CN Advisory. We have published this advisory to provide donors with content that they may find useful when making their giving decisions. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the authors of sources used for the reported information, and not those of Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator is not responsible for the nature or content of the information presented through such external sources and websites.
