Inspired by the teachings of Jesus, Agros International's mission is to break the cycle of poverty and create paths to prosperity for farming families in rural Latin America. Founded in 1984, Agros advances a holistic model of economic and social development through four key opportunity areas: land ownership, market-led agriculture, financial empowerment, and health & well-being. To date, Agros has partnered with 44 rural communities in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua, impacting the lives of over 12,000 people.

Agros' vision is that rural poor families own agricultural land, attain economic self-sufficiency, realize their God-given potential, and pass on to future generations the values and resources that enable them to flourish.

Charity Navigator believes nonprofit organizations that engage in inclusive practices, such as collecting feedback from the people/communities they serve, may be more effective. We've partnered with GuideStar by Candid to survey organizations about their feedback practices. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to fill out the How We Listen section of their Candid profile.

Here's how this organization is listening and learning from the people they serve:

With whom is the organization sharing feedback?
The people we serve, Our staff, Our board
What challenges does the organization face when collecting feedback?
It is difficult to find the ongoing funding to support feedback collection, Our data analysis technology for programs needs to be improved
Describe a recent change in your organization that resulted from feedback.
We have been evaluating the effectiveness of our programs over the last four years by conducting household surveys, community assemblies, and annual workshops at each village we serve This has helped us adjust our family selection criteria when launching new villages and make changes to how we offer technical assistance, agricultural production plans, and credit For example, we now offer cash advances during coffee harvest In the past we gave only in-kind advances Feedback from participating families helped us see the liquidity needs that families have during harvest, and we’re now able to provide true relief to the producers This is an important example of how participant feedback helps us intentionally direct resources to areas where families struggle most
This Constituent Feedback information is provided to us by Candid. At this time, Constituent Feedback information published on this organization's page has no effect on its star rating per our methodology.

Official Charity Response

Agros’ financial health and the impact of donor dollars in the field are top priorities for our staff. We are committed to making your donation count where it matters most: in the field.

Though our Charity Navigator financial score is currently low, we want you to know that Agros’ financial state is healthy. Our current financial score is distorted by the relative cost of doing business in our Seattle office, which primarily does fundraising work, and our offices in Central America, which primarily do programs work. While the Seattle office is home to a small team of nine staff members, the relative staff compensation expenses are much greater than for our nearly forty staff members in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. This distortion exaggerates our Administrative and Fundraising costs and lowers our Financial Score.

You may also note that Agros ended the FY2018 with a large operating deficit. It’s important to note that this deficit was strategically planned in order to help “right-size” the organization. In other words, after several years of downsizing, Agros strategically planned to improve and grow our programs. These changes required greater investment. Since 2018, we have reduced our Seattle-based costs and significantly increased our fundraising revenue in order to have a balanced budget.

The impact of donor dollars is evident in a Social Return on Investment report, which does not appear in Charity Navigator’s financial report. In 2018, Agros completed a social return on investment (SROI) report using an internationally respected methodology developed by Social Value UK. The analysis indicated that an investment of $1.00 in Agros creates $8.28 of social impact in the field. We hope this makes evident how hard we work to leverage every fundraised dollar to create maximum impact in the field.
