Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank's mission is to feed the hungry of Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. Our nonprofit food bank, formerly known as the Arrowhead Food Bank, began February 15, 1984 in Gilbert, MN, as a program of the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (A.E.O.A.). We were formed to coordinate large donations of food arriving for NE Minnesota's 14 area food shelves which were assisting thousands of iron mine workers laid off during one of the most difficult economic times in our region's history. Today, we operate in Duluth, MN, as Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, and rescue nationally and regionally donated food for 180 non-profit agencies and over 44,000 people in need who reside in our service region.

Impact Information

This charity has reported a measure of cost-effectiveness: how much impact (per dollar) your donation will have on the charity's social outcome. The cost-effectiveness calculation was performed using protocols developed by ImpactMatters, an independent auditor of philanthropic impact.

For nonprofits that run multiple programs, we highlight the impact of one program below.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank
Program Activities
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$2 provides a meal to a person in need.
Impact Assessment
5/5
Assessment Benchmark
Impact assessments of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive a 5/5 assessment if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a 4/5 assessment if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a 3/5 assessment.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
