House of Neighborly Service assists and advocates for people challenged by the effects of poverty or situational crisis. Many of our clients are young families who are working but not making ends meet, single mothers and fathers who are doing everything they can to keep their families safe and provide for basic needs. Other clients are seniors, veterans, and disabled who live on fixed incomes, and individuals who experience job loss due to illness or layoff. We help people who have found themselves in economic crisis by providing them with life-sustaining needs: food, clothing, transportation, prescription and utility assistance, plus many more valuable services. We help people plan for the future by providing individualized support to all of our families through case management, financial education, and helping them find the resources they need to thrive.

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
House Of Neighborly Service provides people experiencing homelessness with a temporary place to stay.
Impact Statement
$40 provides a night of shelter for a person experiencing homelessness.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of emergency shelters are based on the cost of providing a night of shelter relative to the Fair Market Rent in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 200% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 400%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of House of Neighborly Service.
Data Source
We look for self-reported shelter nights. If we cannot find this information we estimate it using HIC data.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the provision of shelter by one nonprofit does not diminish the provision of shelter by any other (neighboring) nonprofit. We also assume there is, in general, no slack capacity in the homeless shelter system. In the absence of a given shelter, beneficiaries would not be able to stay at another shelter because other shelters are assumed to have no beds to spare. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
