Impact Information

Program Name: Akilah Institute for Women
Problem

By 2035, an additional 100 million people will join Sub-Saharan Africa’s working-age population, more than the rest of the world combined. However, many young people lack the education and skills to actively participate in the region’s economic growth. This is especially true for women. In East Africa, nearly 85 percent of women still work in subsistence agriculture, living on less than $2 a day. In Rwanda, fewer than 8 percent of university-aged women enroll in higher education.

Strategy

Akilah will continue to create accessible, engaging and highly rigorous educational programs for ambitious East African women which respond to the needs of the private sector. Akilah will further strengthen career navigation skills to enable our students to launch and advance meaningful careers, while also developing a scalable model for women's education for future implementation in the region.

IF:THEN

IF students develop academic and market-relevant skills, leadership skills and career navigation skills, and apply these skills in their everyday lives,...

THEN these young women will be career ready and secure meaningful employment in their career pathways.

IF Akilah graduates secure meaningful employment in their career pathways,...

THEN these young women will achieve economic independence and obtain leadership roles in the workplace and in society.

IF graduates achieve economic independence and obtain leadership roles in the workplace and society,...

THEN Akilah Institute for Women will have made an important contribution to our ultimate vision: East African women lead productive and purposeful lives according to their own definition and invest in their families, communities, and nations.
