Team Rubicon's primary mission is providing disaster relief to those affected by natural disasters, be they domestic or international. By pairing the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders, medical professionals, and technology solutions, Team Rubicon aims to provide the greatest service and impact possible. Through continued service, Team Rubicon seeks to provide our nation's veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military: a purpose, gained through disaster relief; community, built by serving with others; and identity, from recognizing the impact one individual can make. Coupled with leadership development and consistent training and engagement opportunities, Team Rubicon strives to help veterans transition from military to civilian life.

Results Information

Program Name: Veteran Reintegration through Disaster Relief
Problem

After a decade of conflict, 2.2 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are returning home. Concurrently, a recent study found 92 percent of veterans wish to continue their service upon leaving the military. For many of our veterans, the transition from military to civilian life is not an easy one; roughly 22 veterans commit suicide per day.

Strategy

Team Rubicon has convened a coalition of 42,000 volunteers that is shaping disaster response. We believe that the skills and experience attained by our nation’s military veterans can and should be repurposed for good. By using these unique skills, TR not only increases the efficiency of our disaster response efforts, but we are also able to provide our veterans with a purpose, community, and identity that they so sorely need to transition successfully to civilian life.

IF:THEN

IF Team Rubicon effectively leverages the skills and experiences of our nation's military veterans...

THEN Then we will redefine disaster response.

IF We repurpose the unique skills acquired by veterans during their service...

THEN We will increase the efficiency of our disaster response efforts while simultaneously offering veterans a renewed sense of purpose, community, and identity that they sorely need to transition successfully to civilian life.

IF We utilize advanced technology systems and facilitate ongoing training for veteran volunteers and community partners...

THEN We will build a 21st century disaster response organization.
