Program Name: No Wasted Lives
Problem

Nearly half of all deaths in children under five are attributable to SAM. Treatment for this most lethal form of malnutrition is simple & effective, with over 70% of those treated successfully cured. Yet, less than 20% of all the children suffering from this most lethal form of malnutrition receive treatment. This is the result of three things: SAM is not a priority in global health, lack of funding, and need for new treatment approaches. NWL will start its work in Kenya, Burkina Faso, & Mali.

Strategy

The NWL initiative has a 3-prong strategy: Advocacy Agenda; Donor Forum; and Technical Accelerator. The NWL Advocacy Agenda will provide the evidence, intelligence, and data to ensure local governments and other actors make the best decisions regarding SAM prevention/treatment. The Donor Forum will engage with current donors to increase the overall amount of money available and improve existing investments. Finally, the NWL initiative will act as a Technical Accelerator to engage new partners.

IF:THEN

IF The Theory of Change of NWL was built upon three pillars and a fundamental assumption - that no single organization alone can achieve: Lack of Political Will: If governments, donors, and civil society understand the impact of action/inaction on SAM,...

THEN then they will prioritize it and invest the necessary time and resources to prevent and treat it at scale.

IF Need more and strategically allocated funding: If we coordinate and optimize the way available funding is used,...

THEN then, we can treat more children, and offer a more attractive proposition for a new generation of private and public investors.

IF Need for a more creative and innovative approach to treat malnutrition: If we expand the reach of treatment,...

THEN then we will need a variety of simple and cost effective approaches, which will require innovative ideas from a new generation of public health innovators to implement at a faster rate
