2009-09 09/11/2012 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Tuesday, September 11, 2012

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for the Food for the Hungry on May 1, 2014 because the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since September 2012) and because the issue that prompted the Donor Advisory has been resolved. Specifically:

  • The charity provided Charity Navigator with documentation from the IRS which indicated that the investigation was completed and that the IRS accepted Food for the Hungry's tax return for the period ending 9/30/2008 as originally filed.
  • Food for the Hungry confirmed that it was never fined by the IRS.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • The Internal Revenue Service audited Food for the Hungry to determine whether it reported the correct value of certain medicines that it distributed in 2007 and 2008. The IRS was concerned that Food for the Hungry may have reported a value higher than the fair market value.  You can view a copy of the letter from the IRS to Food for the Hungry here.
  • Food for the Hungry stated that it “relied on industry standard practices to determine the value, and its valuation method was approved by its independent auditors.”
  • Food for the Hungry stated that it provided the IRS with detailed records of its valuation method and that “The IRS has not determined that Food for the Hungry reported any incorrect values, nor has it assessed any fines or penalties against Food for the Hungry in connection with the audit, which has not been concluded.”
