The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank's mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. Before the pandemic, one in five neighbors was at risk of hunger. Now, we know the need is even greater. We envision a community where everyone is able to get enough nutritious food in a dignified manner to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families. We address hunger head-on: from our pantry network and home-delivered groceries to our CalFresh (food stamp) enrollment, we work in many ways to nourish and empower neighbors in need. Over 50,000 households turn to us each week for food assistance, and nearly 60 percent of what we distribute is fresh fruits and vegetables. Learn more at www.sfmfoodbank.org.

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$2 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
