United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) improves people's lives by addressing health and human service problems facing Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties. It supports dozens of effective and efficient programs focused on the following: (1) Education - Children enter kindergarten ready to learn and youth graduate as self-sufficient adults; (2) Income - Families find and secure safe, stable and permanent housing; (3) Health - People are free from violence and abuse. Also, through 2-1-1 Maryland at United Way, the organization provides a direct community service which connects callers 24/7 to 4,200 community resources available to them. UWCM also mobilizes volunteers for short- and long-term projects and is a vocal advocate at the local, state and federal levels.

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for the United Way of Central Maryland in June 2012 because the Donor Advisory was in place for more than one year (since May 2011) and because the reason for the Advisory has been resolved. Specifically: 

  • The charity provided documentation on its website that demonstrates that the issues identified in the Donor Advisory have been addressed.
  • We have received the FY 2011 Form 990 that represents the charity's performance for a period of time after the embezzlement had been discovered and put to an end.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this  charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • It was reported on April 28, 2011 that an employee of the United Way of Central Maryland stole more than $400,000 from the charity by directing deposits to a bank account she allegedly took over. For more information, please read The Baltimore Sun's article.
