2011-06 10/22/2012 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Monday, October 22, 2012

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for the UJA-Federation of New York on December 20, 2012 because we received the following public domain documentation that the issue prompting the Donor Advisory has been resolved:

  • A letter from the New York district attorney’s office saying the UJA-Federation of New York was not the focus of the criminal investigation and that it was cooperative with the DA's prosecution of Tracey Nelson.
  • And a letter from Stroz Friedberg LLC (“Stroz”), a global digital risk management and investigations firm, which stated that "there were no inherent defects or weaknesses in UJA-Federation’s systems or controls" and that the UJA-Federation of New York made improvements to the security of its systems.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • On October 19, 2012, the New York Daily News reported that “Tracey Nelson was convicted of stealing donor information from her former employer, the UJA-Federation (formerly the United Jewish Appeal) and providing it to members of a 55-member identity theft ring.” The article also stated that “Nelson spent two and a half years photographing donor checks and collecting names, addresses and account and credit card numbers from donors, then sold them to others to create fraudulent checks and open credit cards on the victims names.” It also said that “Nelson was fired after the summer of 2011, after the theft came to light.” For more details, please see the New York Daily News article.
