2011-12 11/30/2012 --Donor Advisory

This donor advisory was published on Friday, November 30, 2012

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for World Help on September 8, 2014 because the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since November 2012) and because the issues that prompted the Donor Advisory have been resolved. Specifically:

  • World Help terminated their partnership with the independent consultant who overvalued the organization's gifts-in-kind revenue by $250-million over the span of three years.
  • World Help thereafter revised its financial statements and IRS Forms 990 for the years impacted (FY 2009, 2010 and 2011).
  • World Help has adopted a new system for determining valuations for pharmaceutical donations that does not depend solely on outside consultants or solely on the Redbook. World Help has implemented a new, detailed process for valuing both pharmaceutical donations and other gift-in-kind donations.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • On November 29, 2012, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that World Help “originally reported on its 2011 tax forms that it received $239-million in revenue in 2011, 95 percent from noncash donations.” But the charity then revised its total to “$104.1-million:$12.2-million in cash and $92-million in noncash donations” after “a Chronicle examination of World Help’s tax forms… identified roughly $350-million in gifts over three years from groups that said they had never made those donations.” For more information, please see the article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
  • On December 3, 2012, the charity notified us that it had posted information on its site about this issue. Please visit World Help's website to view their statement.
  • On December 10, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that World Help is blaming its former consultant, Clifford Feldman, “for the fact that World Help has had to lower its revenues for the past three years by $250-million in reported donations of medicines, food, and hospital supplies.” Please see the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s article for more information.
  • On April 26, 2013, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that “World Help…now says its revenues were only 7 percent of what it previously reported to the Internal Revenue Service.” The article goes on to say “World Help grew rapidly in recent years thanks to donated medicines. The organization said its revenues totaled $239-million in the informational tax return it filed for 2011. But in its latest audited financial statement, World Help says the accurate figure is much smaller—just $17-million.” For more information, please see The Chronicle of Philanthropy article.
