Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
The Society of St. Andrew primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$1 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of The Society of St. Andrew.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. The Society of St. Andrew publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of The Society of St. Andrew’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.

Official Charity Response

Approximately 85% of the Society of St. Andrew's income and expenses each year are in-kind, specifically the fresh produce that SoSA gleans or recovers (income) and distributes (expense). This means that SoSA's total revenue and total expense picture are extremely dependent on the volume and value of produce recovered and distributed each year. In 2019, both income and expenses were down significantly because bad weather in various parts of the country made produce recovery at scale very difficult, so only 19 million pounds of produce were recovered and distributed. This meant that SoSA's IRS 990 showed a drop in expenses of several million dollars from 2018. A four-star Charity Navigator financial rating is based, in part, on growth of expenses year over year. While a look at SoSA's cash basis would confirm growth in expenses year over year (2019 v. 2018), once produce values are added into the mix, expenses appear to have declined.
