Official Charity Response

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, Children’s Cancer Research Fund improved in significant financial measures. We continued to increase our Program Expenses, the amount of money that funds research, family programs and education and awareness, to 71.6% in FY19. Our Fundraising Efficiency of $0.23 is an improvement over the past five years. And the Program Expenses Growth measure – which looks at how much we spend year over year on programs and services that achieve our mission – was a very strong 18.20%.

We missed a three-star rating by only half a percentage point. The cause for the change in our financial health score and overall rating is due to one specific measure: Liabilities to Assets, a measure that was higher in FY19 compared to previous years. The reason for this is timing. At the end of the fiscal year, we were wrapping up our largest fundraising event which brings an influx of donations. We recorded the research grants we were awarding, which is reflected as a liability in our financial statements until they are paid. We did not pay out the grants until August, when we completed our granting process, which includes applications and scientific review. This difference in timing caused a temporary increase to our liabilities that was resolved once we paid the grants. To avoid this issue in future years, we have changed our fiscal year to January 1 through December 31.

In total, from fiscal year 2019, we funded $12.4 million in research grants, family programs support and education and awareness initiatives.
