Boys and Girls Country was established in 1971. Our mission is to change the lives of children from families in crisis by loving and nurturing them in a Christian environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults. Our children are primarily from the greater Houston area and are almost exclusively placed voluntarily by parents or guardians temporarily or longer-term while they address crises or other issues. Boys and Girls Country has the capacity to serve 48 boys and 40 girls, ages 5-18, a total of 88 children at any one time. Our College and Career Campus is home to our high school graduates while they pursue a degree, vocational/technical certification, join the military, or work a first job. We have been home for 1,435 children since our founding.

Official Charity Response

Boys and Girls Country is grateful for the many people that invest their resources into our mission to provide a Christian home for children from families in crisis, raising them to become self-sustaining adults.  The needs of our children are many, and we strive to be excellent stewards of the funds  with which you have entrusted us.

Charity Navigator, a widely utilized and trusted source of evaluation of charity fiscal health and transparency, has issued its ratings for the 2016 fiscal year.  Boys and Girls Country’s rating, unfortunately, dropped from 4 to 3 stars.

After review, we have determined that our rating was reduced due to our focused efforts over the past few years to reduce spending across the board.  Because of formulas Charity Navigator uses in calculating annualized growth over a four year period, our reduction in spending has lowered our overall rating."

We want to assure you that our children are getting the same, quality care we have always provided.  We also want you to know that we remain fiscally responsible, and transparent in our management.  We invite you to visit Charity Navigator's Rating Methodology page for more information on the way Charity Navigator rates charities.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.  Contact Melissa Simon, Director of Development, at melissas@boysandgirlscountry.org or James Allen, Chief Financial Officer, at jima@boysandgirlscountry.org.  Thank you for your continued support!
