Official Charity Response

For the past eight years, Compassion & Choices has been one of only three percent of organizations to enjoy consistent, repeated 4-star ratings.

This year we received our first 3-star rating in eight years. This rating adjustment occurred because the rate of our programmatic growth decreased recently; specifically, our financial total went from 96.18 in FY 17 to 83.56 in FY 19. However, each year the percentage we are spending on our programs in comparison to administrative costs has remained consistently strong (80%). Our financial total went down because we chose to take advantage of a unique moment in time and make a short-term investment to realize unprecedented progress.

During FY15-17, we had the honor of partnering with advocate Brittany Maynard and her husband, Dan Diaz, catapulting her personal story, our organization and the end-of-life options movement into the national spotlight. Just prior to this, we were fortunate to receive a few very significant gifts from generous donors. These gifts allowed us to take advantage of the unprecedented opportunity that Brittany’s courage provided. While investing these resources steadily over time would have resulted in securing another 4-star Charity Navigator rating; this was not in the best interest of the movement or our donors, who are seeking autonomy and compassion now.

By making a substantial short-term investment, we successfully took a once-fringe issue and catapulted it into the national landscape. This included playing a leadership role in authorizing medical aid in dying in six states in five years and contributing to 21 national and state medical societies dropping their opposition.

In the meantime, despite our lower financial total, we have been able to continue realizing progress on fewer dollars, partly because we were able to invest such significant resources at just the right time. Hopefully, our donors view the reduction in our financial total as an indication that they should contribute more, not less. As we have proven that with more resources, we will advance end-of-life autonomy. In the meantime, we continue to steward resources efficiently and effectively, advancing the movement as quickly as our available resources allow.
