Hudson River Sloop Clearwater preserves and protects the Hudson River, its tributaries and related bodies of water. Clearwater conducts innovative environmental programs, advocacy and celebrations in order to inspire and energize the next generation of environmental leaders. Clearwater was founded in 1969 by music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger. The organization began with the launch of sloop Clearwater - a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the launch of the Clearwater, more than half a million young people and hundreds of thousands of adults have experienced their first real look at an estuary's ecosystem aboard the sloop. Each summer, Clearwater re-connects Hudson Valley residents with their cultural heritage and traditions by bringing them down to the river for the Great Hudson River Revival.

Historical CN Advisories

11/16/2016-09/01/2018: Moderate Concern Advisory

In accordance with our policy for removing CN Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Moderate Concern CN Advisory for the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater on September 1, 2018, because the issues that prompted the CN Advisory have been resolved. Specifically:
Charity Navigator had published a Moderate Concern CN Advisory on Hudson River Sloop Clearwater because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:
  • Hudson River Sloop Clearwater’s 11/2015 audit states that Hudson River Sloop Clearwater has an “Emphasis of Matter Regarding Going Concern” that is outlined in Note 15. It reads, “As discussed in Note 15 to the financial statements, the Organization has suffered recurring reductions in operating revenues and its net assets are represented entirely by fixed assets with essentially no liquid assets that raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern. Management’s plans regarding those matters are also described in Note 14.” For this reason, we have issued this Moderate Concern CN Advisory. For more information, please see the 11/2015 audit.

    Charity Response

The Board President for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater provided Charity Navigator with the following response:

"Much of Clearwater's on-going programmatic work is grant funded. There is earned revenue from some of our on-land and Tide Line teaching programs. Savings from reduced staff payroll, volunteers replacing contract cleaners and suppliers, adaptation of printed material for re-use, and numerous in-kind donations all reduce overhead.

In the long term, I place confidence in our institution being able to proceed with fiscal stability based on our close following of the recommendations of Clearwater's Dyson Foundation grant-covered financial analyst for reorganization."

    • On January 21, 2016, The Journal News published an article titled, "Clearwater cancels Croton festival to restore flagship." For more information, please see The Journal News article.
