The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is the 501 c 3, philanthropic arm of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Association, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917, by a visionary group of women dedicated to helping the government conserve food and improve the public's health and nutrition during World War I. Today, the Academy has over 100,000 credentialed practitioners — registered dietitian nutritionists, dietetic technicians, registered, and other dietetics professionals holding undergraduate and advanced degrees in nutrition and dietetics, and students — and is committed to improving the nation's health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. Members of the Academy play a key role in shaping the public's food choices, thereby improving its nutritional status, and in treating persons with illnesses or injuries. Members offer preventive and medical nutrition therapy services in a variety of settings. Dietetics practitioners work in health care systems, home health care, foodservice, business, research and educational organizations, as well as in private practice. As vital members of medical teams in hospitals, long-term care facilities and health maintenance organizations, they provide medical nutrition therapy — using specific nutrition services to treat chronic conditions, illnesses or injuries. Community-based dietetics practitioners provide health promotion, disease prevention and wellness services. As a leader in food and nutrition issues, the Academy provides expert testimony at hearings, lobbies Congress and other governmental bodies, comments on proposed federal and state regulations, and develops position statements on critical food and nutrition issues. The Academy Foundation collaborates with various departments, committees, and leaders within the Academy and the profession to help us accomplish our goals. Most importantly, the thousands of Academy members and industry donors support the Foundation in these efforts through their generous donations.

Academy Foundation board members and volunteer committees asses the progress of our annual projects and programs as well as the organization's overall performance towards our strategic plan. The Foundation also conducts follow-up surveys with program participants ,donors and Academy membership to measure progress and assess results, Indicators or measurements also include: The annual number of scholarships awarded each year to students at all levels of study to continue to build a pipleline of qualified workers in the dietetic profession The number of research grants awarded each year also are a good indicator of the volume of quality, science-based research being conducted and made available to the profession and improving overall nutritional health world-wide.

The Academy Foundation has initiated a Second Century Campaign to raise the funds necessary to accomplish our identified goals. To-date (12/2018), the Academy Foundation has raised close to $4M towards its Second Century Campaign, or 80% of its $5M goal. Dollars raised have supported Second Century projects focused on the priorities identified in our strategic plan: research and fellowships in both adult and pediatric malnutrition to validate the Academy’s Malnutrition Clinical Characteristics study, a Transitions of Care Technical Implementation guide to ensure patient’s nutrition intervention records are standardized nationwide according to proper guidelines, and international and domestic fellowships that address such issues as malnutrition in Central America, sustainable food systems and health informatics.
