2008-06 09/20/2011 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for Butler Institute of American Art on October 1, 2012 because the Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since September 20, 2011) and because the reason for the Advisory has been resolved. Specifically:

  • Butler Institute of American Art filed amended Forms 990 for FY 2009, 2010 and 2011 to report fundraising expenses.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • Butler Institute of American Art had historically reported fundraising expenses on their Form 990.  But the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Forms 990 listed no fundraising expenses. Based on our experience, charities only rarely are able to raise substantial sums of money without incurring any associated fundraising costs. We reached out to Butler Institute of American Art for clarification, but had not received an adequate explanation. We were therefore unable to evaluate Butler Institute of American Art and thus have issued a Donor Advisory.
