Founded in 1988, San Diego Habitat for Humanity (SDHFH) is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and serves San Diego County. Seeking to put God's love into action, SDHFH brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Habitat was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent and affordable home to live in dignity and safety. Habitat builds homes for ownership by low-income families in need. Habitat homes are sold to Partner Families and are financed by a 0%-interest 25 to 30-year mortgage. The mortgage payments create a revolving fund that Habitat uses to construct future homes for local families in need. Families qualify for the program by showing a demonstrated need for improved housing, a willingness to partner with Habitat by committing to 250-500 hours of "sweat equity" helping to build their own home, and the ability to repay the 0%-interest, 25 to 30-year mortgage.

2009-06 05/12/2011 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Thursday, May 12, 2011

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for San Diego Habitat for Humanity in June 2013 because the Donor Advisory was in place for more than one year and because the issue that prompted the Donor Advisory has been resolved. Specifically:

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this  charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • It was reported on April 22, 2011 that a County Supervisor Diane Jacob asked that the district attorney’s office investigated the San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s financial records. For more information, read the related article in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
  • It was reported on October 6, 2011 that former CEO, Bradford Bates, had filed a wrongful termination and slander lawsuit against San Diego Habitat for Humanity. Please see the FOX 5 News article for more information.
  • It was reported on July 22, 2011 that  San Diego Habitat for Humanity had concluded an audit of its wildfire donations and that the County Supervisor said that, “The basic questions were not answered”. Please see The San Diego Union-Tribune article for more information.
  • The charity's executive director stated that it has "taken steps to ensure donor dollars that came to Habitat have been directed to support fire victims and fire safety programs. We transferred the bulk of donations to the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties, which it will use to educate residents in wildfire-prone areas of San Diego County about fire safety and emergency preparedness. Emergency preparedness kits will also be purchased with these monies and distributed to County residents. Monies that were not transferred were returned to donors, at their request." For more information, please see the San Diego Habitat for Humanity website.
