Letter from the President of Charity Navigator
Dear Friends of Charity Navigator,
As we enter the holiday giving season, one thing we here at Charity Navigator know for sure is that, despite daunting economic challenges, charitable givers have remained steadfast in their commitment to help the people and causes they care about. But tough times demand even smarter giving.
That’s why Charity Navigator is more important than ever and why we’re asking for your support. As a user of Charity Navigator, you know the value of the service we provide. In a survey of our donors last spring, 83% of the 600 who responded said that Charity Navigator significantly affects their giving decisions. A study by the University of Wisconsin put the figure at an even higher 92%.
For over 7 years, we have provided ratings of the financial health of an ever growing number of the nation’s largest and mid-sized charities. Looking forward, we are tremendously excited about adding two additional dimensions to our ratings system that are sure to be of great value to donors, charities and the entire non-profit community.
In early 2010 we intend to add an accountability tab to each charity’s rating page. This tab will show you how each charity stacks up with respect to its policies, procedures, communications and reporting. We will be pulling information from a variety of sources, including the newly revised 990, the charity’s website and ongoing media scans. However, if you want to get a jump on this tab, you can begin to see what our “cousin” watchdogs in the media are reporting on various charities via the News Feed tab which is now available on every charity rating page.
Most exciting of all is our commitment to add a measure of outcomes to our rating system, which is going to take some time and hard work. A charity’s ability to bring about long lasting, meaningful change for the better in the lives of the people and communities they serve should be the primary driver of charitable investments. All charitable givers must use their heads and get the facts, so that their hearts are not broken in the process of trying to help others.
All of us here at Charity Navigator highly value the trust you have placed in us to assist you in your philanthropic endeavors. It is my sincere hope that you will consider making a gift to help us expand and enhance our service. An investment in Charity Navigator is one that reaps continuous dividends for the 3 million users who visit our site each year as well as highly rated charities that routinely tell us their Charity Navigator rating is driving more donors and donations to their organizations.
