Mission

The mission of the San Francisco Opera is to present opera performances of the highest international quality available to the widest possible audiences; to perpetuate and enrich the operatic art form; to be creative and innovative in all aspects of opera; and to take a leadership role in training, arts education and audience development. Founded by Gaetano Merola and incorporated in 1923, San Francisco Opera strives to be the most exciting force in the opera world. Since its founding, San Francisco Opera has presented the United States debut performances of numerous artists and directors. Since 1932, the San Francisco Opera has made its home at the War Memorial Opera House.
