Mission

Founded in 1903 as the Bermuda Biological Station, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) works to transform the fields of oceanography, marine science, and ocean health through a blend of cutting edge research, comprehensive educational experiences and a commitment to share our knowledge internationally. BIOS was set up to take advantage of the ideal location for deep-ocean and coral reef research and education. Its mid-Atlantic site makes this one of only a few blue-water oceanography centers in the world, where scientific experiments can be carried out on the ocean and its inhabitants without the variable of mainland anthropogenic pollutants influencing results. Bermuda's location makes it an ideal place to study the environment for scientists and students from around the globe.
