Mission

The NYC Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is dedicated to eliminating hate violence, sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected (LGBTQH) communities through counseling, advocacy, organizing and public education. Founded in 1980, AVP is the largest anti-violence program in the country. Through our free and confidential 24-hour bilingual hotline, AVP provides direct services to thousands of LGBTQH victims of violence each year. Each year AVP provides hundreds of trainings to thousands of service providers and institutions and works with the larger community to educate the public, to reform government policies and practices and to hold law enforcement and social services agencies accountable to their obligation to treat LGBTQH communities fairly and justly.
