Program Name: Snowball Express
Problem

Since 9/11, it is estimated that 14,000 children have lost a parent serving in the military. After a parent dies, military children often experience unique stresses that further magnify the effects of their loss. Many move from the military base, leave friends, family, and schools, to live to a new community where those around them don’t understand military death. Once in their new community, they are uncomfortable sharing loss with others who don’t understand. Many feel alone and forgotten.

Strategy

Snowball Express connects these children and their surviving parent or guardian to others just like them. We host the largest gathering of children of fallen military in the nation each December and bring these families together from across the United States and abroad. We fly them to Dallas, TX where they connect, heal, and realize that they have hope, they are not alone, and that they have thousands of others who will support them. We also connect them to resources; training, counseling, etc

IF:THEN

IF If children of fallen Military were able to connect with others just like them, other children whose dad or mom lost their life in military service...

THEN Then they would understand that they are not alone in their grief, and together they could share their experiences and help each other heal.

IF If children and families were able to see demonstrations of love and experience a tremendous show of public support that honored their sacrifices and the ultimate sacrifice of their hero...

THEN Then they would know that they are not forgotten, and understand that the supreme sacrifice of their dad or mom, husband or wife will never be forgotten.

IF If children and their surviving parent were able to be connected to support programs that could provide opportunities for therapy and counseling, college scholarships, housing assistance, financial counseling, educational tutoring, job assistance...

THEN Then these children and families have an opportunity to heal, grow, and live a healthy, productive, and inspired life.
