The UN Foundation believes that the United Nations is indispensable to tackling humanity’s greatest challenges and driving global progress. To support the UN, the foundation acts as a strategic partner to help mobilize the ideas, people, and resources it needs to deliver, and grow a diverse and durable constituency for collective action.

The UN Foundation supports the UN’s ability to tackle these challenges and harness opportunities for the benefit of all humanity. As we head deeper into the 21st century, this task is more urgent than ever. We work by building communities and incubating initiatives to support the UN and its priority issues, including achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the years, the UN Foundation has developed five core capabilities that give the organization reach and flexibility to advance its mission: convene, champion, communicate, collaborate, and channel. Convene: providing a trusted space for dialogue among decision-makers and influencers to help advance ideas, set agendas, solve problems, and activate partnerships for action. Champion: building smart campaigns to advocate for the UN, its priorities, and its unique value. Communicate: harnessing cutting-edge communications tools to reach new audiences, raise awareness, and inform debate. Collaborate: incubating initiatives that bring sectors together to advance the SDGs and solve challenges at scale. Channel: mobilizing financial resources for the UN, leverage our resources to attract new support, and enable private individuals, corporations, and philanthropies to contribute to the UN and its causes.

In addition to diligent review of its strategy and programs, the UN Foundation employs rigorous accounting standards and financial controls to effectively steward the more than $2 billion entrusted by our Chairman, partners, and donors since its founding. Financial stewardship efforts have led to 20 consecutive years of clean financial audits and the highest rating of four stars from independent evaluator Charity Navigator. The foundation has an excellent track record of using funds efficiently. In 2017, 87 cents of every dollar received and spent went directly to support UN programs and causes.

In its first 20 years, the UN Foundation mobilized over $2 billion, numerous initiatives, and countless partners to support the UN and UN causes. This support helped the UN pioneer work in a number of important areas - from supporting elections to the rights of adolescent girls to a shared interest in a clean energy future for all. To date, the foundation’s campaigns, alliances, and initiatives have helped the UN deliver 12 million bed nets to families in need, delivered more than 42 million vaccines to protect children from preventable diseases, helped more than 80 million people gain access to cleaner, more efficient stoves and fuels?, trained 66,342 girls in leadership development programs, and much more.
